🚨 SCAM ALERT: Fake Tender RFQ DCS 11-04/2025 from Nyahlane.Mashilo@dcs.gov.za
Scammers continue to impersonate officials from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to send fake Requests for Quotations (RFQs) to businesses. One of the latest scam attempts involves a fraudulent RFQ allegedly from Nyahlane Mashilo, sent using a spoofed or fake email address such as Nyahlane.Mashilo@dcs.gov.za.
📧 Example of the Scam Email
Subject: RFQ NUMBER: DCS 11-04/2025
Kind Regards,
Nyahlane Mashilo

Drakenstein Management Area
Tel: 021 516 0539
Email: Nyahlane.Mashilo@dcs.gov.za
The email typically includes a Request for Quotation (RFQ) attachment, a tight deadline, and an instruction to quote even if the product is outside your company's scope — a red flag commonly seen in these fraud schemes.
⚠️ How to Spot the Scam
| Spoofed email domain | Appears to be @dcs.gov.za, but scammers use email spoofing to fake authenticity. |
| Unlisted RFQ number (DCS 11-04/2025) | Cannot be verified on the official etenders.gov.za website. |
| Urgency and vague product info | Creates pressure to respond quickly and without due diligence. |
| Open bidding to all sectors | Often says “you can outsource the product” — a red flag for scam attempts. |
| Fake delivery addresses | Includes legitimate-sounding government addresses, but scammers will often redirect delivery elsewhere. |
💸 How the Scam Typically Works
-
You receive an RFQ from someone posing as a DCS or government official.
-
You’re told you can quote for any item, even outside your line of business.
-
Once you send a quote, you receive a fraudulent purchase order (PO).
-
You’re asked to purchase and deliver the goods — often to a fake warehouse or third party.
-
Once delivered, you’re never paid, and the scammer disappears.
✅ How to Verify If a Tender Is Legitimate
| Official RFQ listed on etenders.gov.za | Unlisted, unverifiable RFQ number |
| Uses @dcs.gov.za with verifiable contact | Spoofed or fake contact names, unreachable phone numbers |
| Only accepts quotes in your field | Encourages outsourcing, often with little to no detail |
| Verifiable delivery address with procurement contact | Delivery address might be real but manipulated later |
| No urgency or pressure tactics | Pushes for fast response and submission |
